Summit of Heads of State of MERCOSUR
Summit of Heads of State of MERCOSUR and Associated States and XLV Meeting of the Common Market Council
Montevideo,
President
Dilma Rousseff will attend the Summit of Heads of State of MERCOSUR and
Associated States, to be held in Montevideo, on July
12. The Summit will be preceded by the XLV MERCOSUR Common Market
Council (CMC) Meeting, on July 11.
At
the Summit in Montevideo, the participants will analyze ways to improve
economic and commercial integration, with prospects for increasing
trade flows and investments within and outside the region and, on the
political level, with the incorporation of new full members, such as
Bolivia and Ecuador, and associates, such as Guyana and Suriname. They
will assess proposals to increase social participation
in MERCOSUR. On the margins of the Summit, the second edition of the
MERCOSUR Business Forum and the MERCOSUR Social Summit will take place.
At the end of the Summit, the
Pro Tempore Presidency of MERCOSUR will be transferred to Venezuela.
MERCOSUR
is the most successful integration initiative in South America. The
bloc currently represents about 80% of the GDP, 72% of the
territory, 70% of the population, 58% of inflows of foreign direct
investment and 65% of foreign trade in the region. From 2008 to 2012,
whereas global trade grew 13%, bilateral trade between MERCOSUR members
grew over 20%. Since the creation of the bloc,
the value of intra-MERCOSUL trade has grown over nine times, and the
trade flow of the bloc with the rest of the world has multiplied eight
times.
The
success of its economic and commercial integration process is
accompanied by structural convergence, political consultation between
the members and the effective social participation of its citizens. In
2012, during the Brazilian
Pro Tempore Presidency, the Integrated Mobility System was
created and a decision was made that ensures the biannual frequency of
the MERCOSUR Social Summit and establishes its institutional connection
to the bloc.
